I just started on this shawl! Thank you so much for posting it online- out of all the patterns I've seen, it is my favorite for style and not too complicated to be my first big lace piece. I'm really enjoying working on it so far. I will show you when it is done!

I love this! But I have a question, I'm making this, and have arrived at a stumbling block... I'm ready for row 19, and where it says K3, well, is that three of the stitches that have the 3tog? doesn't that make it much narrower? sorry, I'm still learning a lot, and not used to patterns... : )

after a consultation with a fellow knitter i am now straightened out! thanks though!

This is a beautiful pattern - how would I adjust it to end up with a 50 x 80 shawl when I'm done?

Many Thanks

I love your pattern and would like to knit one. However, I am used to patterns that use the symbol * to show when the actual lace pattern begins and another * to show when it ends. I know to add 3 sts at the beginning and end of the row for the border but I get confused after that. Could you please explain to me what I am not getting? After the 3 st. border, do I always add the k 1 before I do the ones within the ( ) symbols? I can't make Row 17 add up to 63 sts across no matter what. Thanks, Rita

I love your pattern and would like to knit one. However, I am used to patterns that use the * symbol at he beginning and end of the actual pattern that is to knitted across until I am to end with the 3 stitch border. I don't know what I'm doing wrong but I can't make Row 17 come out to 63 stitches no matter where I begin after the left-hand 3 stitch border. And what about Row 20 and 24? Are the no 3 st. borders? I really need the * symbols to tell me where to begin the pattern and where to end it. I'm sorry I don't know how to knit the pattern without the help of the usual symbols but I would really appreciate your help in deciphering the pattern. Thanks, Rita

Rita, on row 17, it's just what's in the parentheses that is repeated across to the last three stitches. For the border stitches, their number changes in some of the rows. This is to add 2 more stitches on each edge in order to offset the lace pattern. Then, you later decrease those 2 stitches on each side in order to make the next pattern repeat go back to the original position. If you do exactly what the pattern says, it will come out right. It's basically a 4-row repeat over and over, with edge stitches added in and taken away over and over. I hope you can get it figured out :)

Oh, and the other thing I wanted to mention is that you will not have 63 stitches at the end of Row 17. The lace pattern causes the stitch count to change.

Yvonne - The photos of other people's version of this shawl look like the border is gathered. But the photo of your example/sample shawl shows a flat border. How did you get it flat? This is a lovely shawl, just right for our Sunshine/Hurricane weather!

I tried to sign up as a Follower (when it comes to 'real' knitting & crocheting like the stuff YOU make, I live to grovel) but this is a gov't computer so it wouldn't let me, & my laptop at home is too slow. Just made a donation, almost more for getting to read your witty comments than the patterns. I'll repeat what I said on Paypal: Have you tried the Vanilla coffee (drip, not instant; I forget the brand/maker) yet? Heavenly. If you don't have it down there, let me know (useful data like your address, etc.) & I'll send you a bag. And if you brew an entire double pot, you can use it in cake mix instead of milk or water, then drink up the rest!

Yours,

Nancy

I am trying lace for the first time...and am using a light weight (1) yarn...when I try using a size 10 needle the stiches are two small, should I use a bigger needle?

I love this pattern, I figured out my problems with the needle and found that a size 9 fits best for what I need...I also like the rain drop shapes that it makes...perfect for a beginner such as myself to learn lace on...thank you so much.

Thank you for this pattern...I have a hard time knitting purl...due to a pinched nerve and severe arthritis in my hands...but I still love to knit...I hope it is okay for me to use this pattern to make shawls for our prayer shawl group at church...we give the shawls to the disabled and seniors who need them...please let me know that this is okay...again...
Thank You Very Much, Katherine

Just found this pattern I have lots of sock yarn to use up and wondered if it would still work using sock yarn oddments.Size 10 needles is that 6mm? Hope you see this so I can get started.

Yvonne said...

Paula,
Sock yarn would be okay weight-wise, but whatever you use should be blockable. Superwash might be more difficult to block. The yarn has to be blocked so the lace pattern opens up.
